Mhango says he wants to show the fans a “new Gabadinho Mhango”

 


It feels like AFCON took place to make or break Gabadinho Mhango considering all the pressure on him as one of the Malawian squad’s leaders and proving wrong those who behold him a failure at Orlando Pirates.  

Scoring three goals for a team that was underdogs in almost all games they played in the tournament proved him a ruthless talisman and Pirates couldn’t hold themselves but extend his stay at the club.

Chatting to Thomas Mlambo on the Ultimate Sports Show, Mhango stated that he wants to show the fans a “new Gabadinho Mhango”.

“That was also my concern because other players were playing ahead of me and you must play for your contract,” he told Thomas Mlambo on the Ultimate Sports Show.

“I never got my chance for me being part of the team. But I think the team believes that I can still do better and when I went to the office and they communicated that they would renew my contract I was happy.

“I think this contract is going to make a difference for me to be the new Gabadinho Mhango. I want to do better now.

“I want to help my team, my teammates. I think we will do better, and we have got the support always. I think we will do better this time.”

Mhango expressed his excitement for the extension of the contract and that he’s honoured to be a part of one of the biggest teams in Africa.

“It’s great, like I say, Pirates is the biggest team in Africa,” he added.

“Pirates is the team that everyone wants to play for, everyone down there when you play football, you have the idea of that ‘I would like to play for Pirates’.

“Even sometimes when I speak to people from Malawi who played for Pirates they will always encourage me, they always tell me like ‘boy, this is a big team in Africa’.

“Even European teams or whoever they know about this Orlando Pirates team. So yeah, for me, I was happy when the office said they would extend the contract, I was very happy.”

In what was tagged by many as one of the best Africa Cup of Nations finals ever that saw Senegal triumphing over Egypt had challenging moments for Gomes.
