Real Madrid went all out to sign Kylian Mbappé towards the end of the summer transfer window.
With PSG having had secured Lionel Messi's signature at the time, they were believed to be fabricating a trio of the Argentine, Mbappé, and Neymar intending to clinch the UEFA Champions League title this season.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the 22-year-old wanted to leave PSG for Real Madrid because he wanted the club to receive a big transfer fee they would use to get his replacement.
“I asked to leave Paris Saint-Germain, yes. It was in July and because from the moment I didn't want to extend the contract, I wanted the club to receive a transfer fee to have a quality replacement,” he said.
“I wanted something respectful between me and PSG: I said, if you don't want me to leave, I'll stay”
“Personally, I didn't really appreciate Paris Saint-Germain saying 'He is asking to leave in the last week of August…' because that is wrong. It made me feel like a theif. I informed them early, at the end of July”.
“I asked to leave in July, yes - but it’s not true that I’ve turned down 7 contract extension proposals… Paris Saint-Germain have given me a lot. I have always been happy in the four years I spent here, and I still am”.
The former Monaco forward has scored four league goals for Les Parisians this season.
It remains to be seen if the 2018 FIFA World Cup young player of the tournament will sign a pre-contract with Los Blancos in January.
